French and Indian War slash anyone?

Okay, in my last post I mentioned something about a slashy story set in America during the French and Indian War (mid 1700's). It's been nagging me ever since I saw PBS's French and Indian War program in January. Talk about a persistent plotbunny. o_0

So the plot at its most very basic is during a battle towards the beginning of the French and Indian War a French soldier and a British soldier get separated far from their regiments as well as "civilization" in general. Faced with a variety of dangers, they realize that their best shot at getting back to their respective armies alive is to work together and reluctantly agree to get along.

Man, that is so vague, but I promise it'll be fleshed out later. Really. Anywho, the two protagonists…

Name: Nathaniel Merrington
Nationality: British
Age: 26
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 141 lbs.
Rank: Captain in the 47th Regiment of Foot

Nathaniel is the only child of a very competent general whose family has a very long military history. Nate is an incredibly serious person and tends to keep people at arms length. Still, he's not a bad guy and has very strong concepts of honor and loyalty. He can be quite casually sarcastic and insensitive though, particularly to fellow soldiers he doesn't think are being "tough enough". He can't stand weakness and is fiercely independent himself.

Nate's life has been largely shaped by his father's death when Nathaniel was ten, and the event more or less put a very abrupt end to his childhood. He hero-worshipped his father, and it was a very crushing blow to lose him. This has also made him wary of getting attached to people.

Being the only son of the Merrington family, it's always been expected that Nathaniel would "follow in his father's footsteps", and Nate has put astounding—single-minded even—amounts of effort into trying to live up to these expectations. However, that's perfectly alright with Nate since he excels at being a soldier though he's not known for being the friendliest of commanders. Nathaniel is quite dedicated to the armed forces—apparent in the fact that he's already risen to the rank of captain at twenty-six. Although his mother has nagged him about it a few times, he shows no interest in getting married, and the running joke with some of his comrades is that he'd marry his job if he could.

His views on the French: Cannot stand them. Nate sees French people as immoral, limp-wristed fools, and he—like many of his fellow soldiers—often refers to them as "frogs". He's never really met any French people off the battlefield though so his opinions have no real basis in personal experience. As an added reason for his loathing, his father was also killed in the New World during a skirmish with French soldiers.

Whoo, Nate in full dress uniform. It was a royal pain finding references to draw this. *headdesk*

Name: Dimitri Émile Alain Gisée
Nationality: French
Age: 29
Height: 5' 4"
Weight: 127 lbs.
Rank: Lieutenant in Le Regiment de Languedoc

Dimitri comes from an aristocratic family (his dad is a Marquis), and he's never really been without anything. He's generally a nice guy but can unintentionally be a bit of a snob. A fairly extroverted person, he usually gets along with most people, and he tries to make even the worst of situations into joke, his philosophy being that it's better to laugh at your problems then to cry over them. Dimitri prefers to take everything in stride, but in spite of his laidback attitude, he is a determined individual, and when he's set a task he will work with it the best he can.

Dimitri joined the army around twenty (much to his mother and little sister's dismay) because of a very idealistic view of being a soldier and a bad case of "I-want-to-see-the-world" syndrome. He's since come down to earth a bit and still does not regret his career choice. His natural charisma has helped make him an able leader, and he's also a decent strategist. However, Dimitri's skills with actual fighting are less stellar, and that's definitely hindered him in advancing to a higher rank.

His view on the British: He doesn't like them. Dimitri thinks they're all frigid elitists, and in the small selection of British people he has met, this stereotype has often proved fairly accurate.

I had a much easier time with references for Dimitri's uniform. ^^

(Note: In full dress uniform, Dimitri's hair is powdered, but its natural color is blond.)

As far as being homosexual goes, Dimitri's known for years that he likes men instead of women. He's kept it a secret though from everyone but the few lovers he's had, his younger sister, and the woman who almost became his fiancée (there'll probably be interesting backstory on that later). It doesn't bother him at all, and the only real scruple he'll have with falling for Nathaniel is that Nate is British.

Nathaniel on the other hand will be even less comfortable with (read: furiously against) the idea in general. He even hates the thought of being friends with Dimitri. When Nate realizes he's kind of attracted to the older man though he'll be horrified. First it'll be "OMG, you're French!!" Then it'll be "OMG, you're a man!!" Should be interesting to see if these two actually end up together or not, non?

And if you've put up with all of that so far, I offer you a bit of slash!pic. Set waaaaaay in the future since for at least the first half of the story, Nathaniel could never be so fluffy. XD

Mmm, now watch me never post about this again. I suck so bad when it comes to my original ideas. -_-'

WOW! THIS LOOKS ALL SO GREAT!! :DDDD
I wish I was as well organized/detailed when it comes to character profiles. ^_^ Heheheheh Nate apears to be my kind of character. XD

Ofcourse, awesome detail on the uniforms! :D

"Mmm, now watch me never post about this again."

I really hope that doesn't happen. These character ideas have great potential!

Aw, thanks!
Oh, I'm sooo anal retentive, plus I like organizing things. XD Nate's a cool guy.

I'm incredibly happy with how those came out even though it took forever. -_-'

I certainly hope I stick with it.

Great work always takes I long time. Believe me, I learned that the hard way. XD

Oh, dearest me! Those are so cute AND interesting. Geez, if you can make the French and Indian war, a) interesting, b) exciting, and c) slashy, I will love you.
I hated to study that part as any part of Canadian history. >_< Fortunately, I'm done.

And they look sooooo sweet in the last pic.

Since I am of this great French ancestry myself (i.e. Québec), I will permit myself to say: in those situations, the French are always the gayest, eh? ;P *snort*

Should be interesting to see if these two actually end up together or not, non?

It's almost like an historical (and slashy) reality show!!! *bounces&squees*

[identity profile] tsuru-san.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
*grin* Thanks, cherie!

I shall do my best. *salutes* I must admit, I am rather fond of this war.

"In those situations"? Aren't they always the gayest in general? lol

Thank you! I'm seriously crossing my fingers and hoping I don't blow this idea. That would be so lame. So far though this plotbunny has shown no signs of leaving.

And did you model Dmitri after the Lafayette you drew for me?
Oh, good eye, you noticed. Yes, I did. I liked the style of Lafayette, and my drawing of him wasn't too far off from the mental image I had of Dimitri. Nathaniel also happens to take after Commodore Norrington a bit.

Hmm... It sounds quite interesting, although I must say I'm not particularly fond of Nathaniel--although that might have something to do with his attitude toward the French. (Not that it's not perfectly accurate, of course...)

I would totally love to beta, if you ever get around to writting it, and would let me?

Wow, thanks, cherie.

Well, I've never really had a beta, but if you're definitely interested I will certainly keep you in mind when I start putting it in story format. So far what I've written is in play format because I find that easier to work with, and it's not even close to a first draft yet. *facepalm*

It's looking to be my top summer project so far though.

*squees* This is so cool! Is this going to be a comic, or a (sometimes illustrated) written story?

Finding references might have been a pain, but it was so worth it! Can't wait to see more!

[identity profile] tsuru-san.livejournal.com 2006-05-08 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thanks, Amy! Well, at this point, I'm going for heavily illustrated novella and maybe--light years from now--a comic.

Very much worth it. *grins* And now I have a good basis for future drawings.
