*envies* You go, girl! I haven't actually finished anything, but there is still hope.

*replied*

so it's really Julien's fault that he ended up on his ass in the mud.
Pretty much, yes. Joining the military was a real wake up call for Julien. He realized that he could get through life comfortably with his family's prestige and fortune, but if he wanted to really earn respect for himself personally, he would have to work at it. However, even though he started putting more effort into what he did, he still couldn't completely make up for lost time.

Title: A Pretty Lieutenant
Word Count: 229

Although they wouldn't meet until right before they left for Canada, Count Jean-Marie first saw Dimitri Gisée three months before then. It was at a party, unsurprisingly, and despite the fact that neither spoke to the other, Dimitri left a memorable impression on the Count.

"He's really quite attractive. Michel's nephew if I'm not mistaken." Jean-Marie looked out across the dancer floor at a stunning youth in fine military dress.

Beside the Count, his manservant Jacques followed his master's gaze. "The Lieutenant, my Lord?"

"Yes, that's him." Jean-Marie eyed the lieutenant in question. How dapper he looked in his clean uniform and white wig. Dimitri moved with the grace an elegance that only good breeding could bring, and even across the room the Count caught glimpses of the other soldier's charming smile. "Rather lovely I think," Jean-Marie murmured discreetly to his aide. "What say you, Jacques?"

The older man shook his head. "A typical youth despite his family's influence. I should think," the stout man replied gravely, "that my Lord would not like him overly much."

Jean-Marie chuckled. "Oh wouldn't I?"

"Heavens, no, my Lord! The lieutenant has quite a mouth on him, sir—or so I've heard. No respect for authority," Jacques added with obvious displeasure.

The Count chuckled, thoughtfully swishing his wine around in its glass. "Impertinent is he? Sounds like a man after my own heart."
