MoTF update: chapter 1

Well, it finally, actually happened... After just over a year of working on the MoTF story, I have finally finished chapter one! O_O

Title: Masters of Their Field (chapter 1)
Fandom: French and Indian War historical fiction
Rating: PG-13 (for language; rating will go up)
Pairing: will eventually be Nathaniel Merrington/Dimitri Gisée
Summary: The French and Indian War has been going on for about two years now when Nathaniel Merrington is sent from Nova Scotia to New York and then north along the Hudson River where he will help run a British fort. However, what starts out as a simple appointment to a colonial outpost quickly spirals out of Nathaniel's hands when he and a French soldier, Dimitri Gisée, end up uncovering a double agent playing the French and British forces in North America against each other.
Notes: Translations of French dialogue are footnoted. (Constructive crit welcome, especially on grammar/spelling.)

W00t! It's started! *claps* A fabulous start, too! I loved Jean-Marie getting pushed over the railing! *snicker* I didn't find anything that needed fixing regarding grammar and spelling. I just want to see what happens next. *grin*

Yes, it finally has, and I am happy you liked it! Heh, poor Jean-Marie... Even though he doesn't have a big part in the story, I'm sooo glad I fleshed out his character. ^^

I've learned the value of doing that, too. *smile* I had one character for a story I'm working on who kept refusing to tell me his story, but he finally did in the end and I'm glad for it, because it turns out he may have a larger part in the story than I originally thought.

I am so glad you enjoyed it, mon amie! *pets Jean-Marie* At least he put a fight; he may show up again at the end of the story when Nathaniel is at the French Fort Charlotte. *grin* When I was proofreading this chapter, I kept thinking, 'Geez, Nathaniel's such an asshole...' XD

Ooh, and yay to his possibly showing up at the end!
Michel Jervais (with a little pushing from André) arranges a prisoner exchange for Jean-Marie to get him back to Fort Charlotte. ^__^

Fantastic opening!

Nothing like artillery, gunfire and foul-mouthed Frenchmen to get a fangirl *squee*

Oowers!!!

=^..^=

Thank you! Since most of the story takes place on land, I wanted to get a little naval skirmish in the beginning. ^^ I'm glad it was entertaining.

Hahaha! wow, Robin Tremaine's a bitch. hahaha XD

Love where this is going~ Keep up the good stuff!!

[identity profile] tsuru-san.livejournal.com 2007-02-24 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he is (and so is Nathaniel). *pokes him* I kinda like Robin though. He's also the first totally straight character I ever came up with. XD

Thank you very much!

[identity profile] carlomelo.livejournal.com 2007-02-24 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahah I try to make straight characters, but they end up turning into bisexual whores (Bill was SUPPOSED TO BE straight...but for somereason he gets several scenes with Oskar lolzwtf) XDDDD *lesigh*
Regardless, Robin's an interesting character, though. I usually admire the womanizer kind of characters! heehee! Keep it up! :DDDDD

Usually I have the same problem (André and Jean-Marie were originally supposed to be straight). (Aw, Bill/Oskar is cute. Will we be seeing any of that pairing in ze comic?)

Thank you!

Heh, that's great! Jean-Marie is so awesome. (Grammar point: I don't actually speak French, but "Obtenez-le hors de la" doesn't look right. "Obtener" would be like "obtain" or to literally get - might not something like "remove him" be better? (Idioms are annoying. :P))

[identity profile] tsuru-san.livejournal.com 2007-03-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Jean-Marie is certainly a spirited guy. XD (Thanks very much for the input; my French is only so-so. However, I'm pretty sure this part is okay. [I asked my French teacher to look over my translations.] You are right though, "obtenir", can mean to obtain, but it also definitely means to get something—or in this case, someone.)

(Right-o. See, I don't know French, and in Italian the equivalent phrase is "cacciatelo via", using the same verb as "hunt" or "chase".)
