Shakespearean slash

My English class finally finished The Tragedy of Julius Caesar today, and all I've got to say is that it's way slashier then I originally thought! Act IV alone had me nearly laughing right in the middle of class. The slash!junkie in me suspects that there was definitely something between Caesar and Antony and is convinced that Brutus and Cassius are lovers.
The evidence… Whenever they speak about themselves in third person, they use a possessive with Brutus’s name (i.e. “Cassius: Hath Cassius lived to be but mirth and laughter to his Brutus,…” or “Brutus: …from henceforth, when you are over-earnest with your Brutus,…”). And they often refer to each other as “lover”, however, the footnotes claim that this is just another way to call someone a friend. Yeah, sure, lol.
There are also more specific quotes all over the place, but these two are the best. However, if I remember anymore really good ones, they will be added.
First, Act IV, scene III [lines 159—162]:
(not too long after they finish arguing in Brutus’ tent)
Cassius: My heart is thirsty for that noble pledge. Fill, Lucius, till the wine o’erswell the cup; I cannot drink to much of Brutus’ love.
And quite possibly the slashiest one of all, Act IV, scene III [lines 117—120]:
(this is right after they finish arguing)
Cassius: …Give me your hand.
Brutus: And my heart too.
Cassius: O Brutus!
Once summer vacation starts, and I have enough spare time, I’m gonna delve into this fandom and gleefully start some fics. w00t!

Yay!
Date: 2004-05-20 09:47 pm (UTC)In my copy, it has footnotes for "lover" and "love" every time. Except when it was between Brutus and Cassius. But, yeah. My teacher knows how I feel about those two (I was constantly giggling and commenting on their dialogue), so she is so lucky we only read the first three acts in class. Otherwise, she never would have heard the end of it. And that Cassius quote definitely seemed to have a double meaning to me. Maybe I just have a dirty mind... *shrugs*
One of the most amusing things to me was Antony constantly talking to Caesar's dead body. And then Brutus does it with Cassius'! My friends and I have so many inside jokes about that play... Sorry for, like, making my own journal entry yours! *gives you cookies to make up for it* Later!

Re: Yay!
Date: 2004-05-21 01:27 am (UTC)*nods head in agreement* That seems to be how inspiration goes, I'm afraid. I often seem to have that problem, especially when I start writing in a new fandom. Sometimes short, pointless drabbles help clear up writer's block though...it's worth a try.
Anyways, it's nice to know some teachers don't mind slashiness too much. If I so much as implied that I thought Brutus and Cassius (or any other male characters in the play)were lovers, I'd probably be sent ASAP to the school psychiatrist.

That makes two of us. lol
