Finally, a Masters of Their Field update. Wow, it's been awhile! There's plenty more coming which I might have finished soon in spite of evil school.
On with ze art…
Here's Dimitri reading some dispatch or other.

Nathaniel/Dimitri kiss. This picture was languishing around for awhile. I finally managed to fix a few things, so at least it looks decent now.

Another pic I salvaged. This has been around since -June-. At first I thought it was awful, but now that I've finished it, it doesn't look as bad. Nate's proportion still though sucks since parts of the pic were inked too hastily. *headtilt* The coloring still needs a bit of work too.

Anyways, here's the story behind this: When Dimitri and Nathaniel are almost to Canada, they are captured by British soldiers and taken to a nearby fort. Low-and-behold, the person in charge of the fort is a newly-promoted Julien Marksby who is convinced that Dimitri is a spy and plans to hang him for it. Nathaniel is released but awaiting and inquiry and possible court martial for his disappearance.
Nathaniel vacillates over what he should do until about midnight because by now he more-or-less realized he loves Dimitri and definitely cares about him as a friend, but Nate also has a duty as a British subject, etc. In the end, he helps Dimitri escape, and the two of them hide at a nearby fur trapper's home, said trapper being André Marien. Unfortunately, they underestimated Julien, and he finds them and has them both arrested and André too. There's a brief scuffle during which Dimitri gets hit over the head. So here they are, locked up in the fort and Dimitri still unconscious.
I also recommend checking out the line art for this pic.
And finally, the product of my doodling. My apologies if some of the pencil is a bit faint.

Now if you would please direct your attention to the image center left. That's the new minor character I've been mentioning. His name is Timothy Jennings. He has dirty blonde hair, muddy brown eyes, and a sort of puppy personality. He's a pudgy, kind, generally useless 16-year-old who was press-ganged into Robin Tremain's crew while they were at port in Jamaica. Timothy is mostly a deckhand/cabin boy/cook's assistant.
At one point in the Caribbean, Nathaniel and some other foot soldiers happened to be aboard the ship during a skirmish with pirates, and Nate saved Timothy's life. Timothy has hero-worshipped him ever sense, fawning over him and following him everywhere. This, naturally, drives anti-social Nathaniel crazy, and he can be quite unkind to Timothy. What he really dislikes is that Timothy embodies all the personality traits he despises: inept, people-pleaser, clingy, dependent, and self-deprecating.
However, Timothy barely notices, and still idolizes Nate, willing to do pretty much whatever he wants. Nathaniel intentionally doesn't take advantage of Timothy though. Mostly he's just annoyed and tries to ignore him.
Tim will be in about the first three or so chapters when Nate is on his way to New England. The pirate fight happened before the story's start, but it will be mentioned at the beginning in passing, and later more vividly as a flashback/story sequence when Nate and Dimitri are staying the night at a settlers' homestead and after some prodding from Dimitri, Nate regales the family's two sons w/ his travels in the Caribbean.
Whew, and that's it! Next time, some watercolor!
Other than that, my cousin Christopher is here, and we just spent the last couple hours gallavanting at Barnes & Noble. *eagerly reads new book*

Date: 2006-09-04 08:23 pm (UTC)LOVIN' the Nathaniel+Dimitri romance! <3
They're such an angsty couple~! Keeps me attached! :D
And Timothy seems to be quite a cute chara~! <3
I love young charas who idolize someone, even if that someone doesn't give attention to him. Poor Timmy. X3
And your CG coloring isn't so bad~! I love it!
If you really want me to be critical, I'd say Nate and Dimitri should be given a slight bluer hue in the dark environment because shade/gloom would usually cool the objectives' colors down. But that's being really picky! X3
I really admire your work and KEEP DRAWING~~!!! :DDDD
Re: ~!!!
Date: 2006-09-04 08:33 pm (UTC)Yes, I'm rather fond of Tim. Pity, Nathaniel is such bastard to him half the time. -_-' In fact, Nate's not the nicest guy in general...
Thank you! I am trying although I find I still rather like traditional mediums best. But oh how lovely PS blending can turn out when done properly...!
Thank you, cherie! I feel likewise about your art. ^^

Date: 2006-09-04 08:42 pm (UTC)It took me a year or two to just figure out what 'layers' were all about. hahah
I'd recommend using Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation or Color Balance. It works reaaaaally well with changing the colors.

Date: 2006-09-05 09:51 pm (UTC)I actually agree the Hue/Sat ver looks really spiffy!
Thank you! When I eventually post this pic on devART, this is probably the version I'll use.

Date: 2006-09-05 09:54 pm (UTC)is Christopher the computer nerd cousin?
Yup, that's him. It's always nice having him around; he's one of my favorite family members.
I miss you too! How's CA though? It must be really cool.
She says hi back. ^^

Date: 2006-09-04 11:32 pm (UTC)Lovely drawings as usual. I really love the third one. It's so vibrant. o.O I've yet to master the whole shading with computer-drawing thingees, personally. I stink at it. -_-;;; But it looks pretty.
The prospect of Nazi!Comic intrigues me.

Date: 2006-09-05 09:57 pm (UTC)Thank you! I'm very happy I was able to mostly salvage the third one. Comp shading is a bit of a pain, but it can turn out soooo pretty if one does it right. *wistful sigh* Ah well, at least I'm improving. What program do you use?
Yes, I figured it would. Hopefully it'll get done soon. My imagination is so flighty. -_-'
